Illuminate Your Miles: LED Clips vs. Headlamps for Runners

Have you ever been on a trail run at night and felt your headlamp start to fade? That shrinking tunnel vision isn’t just annoying; it’s a safety hazard. At RunSafeGear, we believe the most dangerous miles aren’t the ones with a medal at the end—they are the miles you log alone at 4:00 AM on a Tuesday.

Our goal at RSG is simple: every runner gets home safe and stays ready for the next road or trail pounding training session. Below, I break down the truth about the gear I’ve used over thousands of miles.

The EveryDay Run (EDR) Standard

Preparation for success starts with the right equipment for your EDR. I’ve logged 1,000 miles a year for over 15 years, and I’ve learned that “having one is none, and having two is one.”

1. Amazon Quick Buys (The “Be Seen” Lights)

I’m a big fan of these for quick, “grab and go” runs after dinner. Amazon Quick Buys

  • Pros: Inexpensive (usually around $20 for a two-pack), USB-rechargeable with no extra cords needed, and they clip anywhere—collars, straps, or pockets.
  • Cons: Great for being seen by cars, but not powerful enough to navigate technical trails on their own.

2. High-Performance Headlamps

When you are out from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM during a 24-hour ultra, you need serious power.

  • The Fenix HM50R: This is my personal favorite. It packs 700 lumens and is dual-purpose—you can pop it off the headband and use the metal clip to attach it to your vest.
  • The “Just in Case” Light: I always keep a basic AAA-battery headlamp in my bin. If your rechargeable dies and you have no way to plug in, a battery swap can save your race.

3. Meeting Race Requirements

Don’t fall victim to being unprepared. Many ultramarathons require a solid red or flashing “beacon” light. I carry a small, dedicated flasher that has lasted me four years on a single battery to ensure I meet those safety standards.
